Description: Risk adjustment is needed under IFRS 17 to reflect the compensation that a company requires for bearing the uncertainty about the amount and timing of the cash flows that arises from non-financial risk. Companies are also required to disclose the method and confidence level used for the calculation of the RA. However, IFRS 17 doesn’t specify a method and a confidence level, nor does it provide a list of specific risks that are considered to be non-financial risk. Companies need to define them based on their own preferences or existing practices. This article will introduce available approaches and discuss the confidence level approach with potential consideration stemming from industry preferences and illustrative examples.

Description: This session will look into life insurers’ anticipated business impacts as a result of the implementation of the new accounting standard for insurance contracts, IFRS 17. What will be the financial impact as of day one as a result of transition? How will embedded value for common life insurance products change? How will costs of reinsurance be affected? Will products have to be re-designed and/or re-priced? IFRS 17 may have more ramifications into the way insurers are doing business than we have anticipated so far. While we are working on the implementation of this new standard, we should not lose sight of the business impacts that will follow. Description: After International Accounting Standards Board (“IASB”) issued International Financial Reporting Standard No. 17 – Insurance Contracts (“IFRS 17”), IASB received much feedback and suggestions for improvement. As a result, in early 2019, IASB made limited changes to IFRS 17. The presentation will briefly discuss the main contents and effects of those changes.

Some of the questions that are answered include classification, stochastic modeling requirements, application of the illiquidity premium, methods to systematically allocate between P&L and OCI, and use of locked in discount rates for CSM purposes.

Description: This article discusses the possible factors that could impact shareholders' reported equity upon transition from IFRS 4 to IFRS 17. It classifies these factors in two categories: 'Factors Related to Insurer's Business and Accounting Practices up to the Transition Date' and 'Factors Related to Implementation of IFRS 17'. It also briefly discusses improvements that are expected in the financial statements from adopting IFRS 17.

Description: The discount rate is one of the most critical topics in IFRS 17 and may have important repercussions on product profitability. The presenters will cover practical implementation considerations, including alternative approaches to illiquidity premium calculation for business supported by fixed assets with credit risks. Other implementation considerations will also be covered, including granularity of setting the discount rate, application to new business, and implications on asset and liability modeling. The presenters will then discuss how discount rates could be utilized in an Economic Scenario Generator (ESG) to assist IFRS17 calculations, particularly for risk-neutral valuation of the time value of options and guarantees.

Description: After 23 years, the new guidelines for insurance contracts have been released, which describe life insurance economic behavior and show its operating results in an unprecedented and complex accounting language. The management of the insurance industry, as well as accounting and actuarial professionals, will face new challenges. This speech started from the basic logic of accounting and the framework of the standards, combined with the insurance industry's operating rules and accounting characteristics, to illustrate the orientation of the new insurance contract standards. From the internal and external perspectives of life insurance operation, this paper used common management language to discuss the understanding of the new insurance contract standards, the focus issues of the industry and the key issue of the effective implementation of the new standards -- the deep integration of accounting and actuarial.
